In an effort to expand the activities of CEPIA’s primary fundraiser, Tamarindo’s long-time resident and surfer Jerry Hirsch along with some friends have organized the First Annual Tamarindo International Surf Film Festival to be part of this year’s Robert August Surf & Turf activities.
The film festival will coincide with the three-day golf and surf tournament, which is now presented by Cheboards and Sun Bum.
The Surf & Turf charity event—four-man team golf scramble at Hacienda Pinilla and surf contest in Tamarindo—will take place March 15- 17 with the Tamarindo International Surf Film Festival incorporated into the schedule.
There will be showings of nine short and three feature films at the Garden Plaza Multicines Tamarindo, who have donated their facilities for the showing of these surf movies. After the feature film, “Momentum Generation,” there will be a question and answer session with the film’s director Jeff Zimbalist, who will on hand for the screening. Before the surf movies and during intermission between the various films, there will be food, drinks and live music all weekend at the Garden Plaza space that houses Multicines Tamarindo.
“Our mission is to energize the multicultural surf community in Costa Rica through the magic of cinema and to celebrate the artists and filmmakers who take us there,” explained Hirsch, whose team have modeled the event after the Florida Surf Film Festival.
March 15 and 16 evenings will feature surf films, and on Saturday, there will be the awards ceremony for the golf and surf tournaments in the theater location. On Sunday, March 17, the festival will present a free movie matinee for children.
“If you google surf film festivals you come up with over 9,000,000 choices!” added Hirsch “Even Sweden has a surf film festival.
Costa Rica does not and we live and breathe surfing. Surf films of today are exploratory. They deal with relationships, friendships, hardships, competition, social issues, the environment, global warming. We need to connect with the outside world and learn about how others are dealing with these issues.
It’s just not about catching waves anymore. CEPIA is an organization that teaches young people. It’s a perfect fit. Education and communication.
This festival is a gift I give to my friends in Tamarindo for enriching my life.”
All proceeds from the Robert August Surf & Turf presented by Cheboards and Sun Bum, as well as the Tamarindo International Surf Film Festival will go to benefit CEPIA.
“The event will raise the money needed for CEPIA to create an afterschool program (swimming surfing, basketball, soccer, arts, English, etc.) for 600 children yearly and give access to a free counseling and legal service for 100 children who are of violence or difficult life situations,” said CEPIA’s founder Laetitia Deweer.
“We are also very happy that Multicines offers us the opportunity to bring 150 underprivileged children to the movie theatre on Sunday, March 17, with free popcorn and a cool inspirational movie.”
Deweer added: “We are happy to help Jerry Hirsch and Robert August reshape the Robert August Surf & Turf event by adding an important cultural, artistic component: the surf film festival. It will allow us to attract a broader public, create a new cultural happening for Tamarindo and offer the sponsors and participants of the Surf & Turf new and fun evening activities.”
Ticket prices for the Tamarindo International Film Festival are Friday $15, Saturday $15 or $25 for both nights—in advance. The night of the event the tickets will be $20.
Advance tickets are available at Multicines Tamarindo and Liberia, SurfBox Flamingo, CEPIA, The Bookstore of the Waves (formerly Jaime Peligro).
