Local Businesses Sponsor Tamarindo Surfer

Local Tamarindo surfer and 2006 Costa Rican National Surf Champion Isaac Vega has been busy lately. Between gaining local sponsors and winning big at the IX PanAmerican Surfing Games, it’s surprising he has any time to himself at all.

In the beginning of November, the 22-year-old goofy-footer competed with the rest of the Costa Rica team in the Games, which were held at Playa Olivenca de Ilhéus in Bahia, Brazil. The team went into the competition short-handed, with only eight surfers to fill the 15 spots. However, that didn’t dampen their spirit, and it certainly didn’t stop Vega from winning. The team won second place and a silver medal in the Games, and Vega contributed significantly to that success. He came in ninth place overall, but then he also went on to help out his team even more. Although he’s a talented shortboarder and does not usually compete as a bodyboarder, he stepped up and participated in the male bodyboard division, where he took 13th place.

Proud of their local surfer, Tamarindo businesses have also done their part to step up and help Vega with his surfing career. The Tamarindo Diria Beach and Golf Resort spearheaded a drive to sponsor Isaac on his trip to the IX PanAmerican Surfing Games in at Playa Olivenca de Ilhéus – Bahia, Brazil, in the beginning of November. Not only did Vega contribute to the team, earning a silver medal and second place in the Games, but he himself came in ninth place overall.

The Gold donors—a donation of $200 of more—included the Diria, Quiksilver, Surftech/Blue Trailz Surf Shop, and Ted Alexander. The Silver donors—a donation of $100—included Surfrider Foundation Tamarindo, ReMax Ocean Surf Realty, Horizones Pacific, Xyanna Bateau, and Valenzuela Architectos. These organizations deserve a big thanks for helping their local surfer get to the games and be able to compete.

When he’s not surfing, Vega enjoys funk and punk rock music ,as well as watching surf movies. He considers his friends and family to be his heroes and likes to watch fight knockouts on the FX television channel.

July 2010 “Tamarindo Happenings”

July 4th is American Independence Day; so don’t forget to have a picnic with your family and friends.

Got the Fever? Support your favorite soccer teams by watching the World Cup 2010, ending July 11th. Sharky’s will be open for all games and you can also catch the morning games before 11:30 a.m. at Olga’s Coffee Shop, located in front of Voodoo restaurant.

Tamarindo’s 10th Annual “Robert August Surf n’ Turf” tournament will be held this year from July 29 – August 1, at Hacienda Pinilla. Registration will be July 28, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., at the Best Western Tamarindo Vista Villas. July 29, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., is the surf competition and lunch at Lola’s, with a 7 p.m. Sushi Dinner. On July 30, at 9 a.m., is the Hacienda Pinilla golf tournament, followed by a 9 p.m. cocktail party. There will also be boat rides to Witches and Ollies (surf permitting) on August 1 – 2. Tamarindo welcomes the new owners, George Van Engelen and his son, Nico, to Kahiki Restaurant.
