Edelweiss, Switzerland´s leading leisure airline, expands to Latin America. • For the first time, carrier offers regular flights between San José and Zurich starting May 9, 2017.

A new non-stop route between ZurichSan José will be operating beginning May 9, 2017 using Airbus A340-300 aircraft twice a week.

This connection will allow Swiss and European tourists to arrive in Costa Rica comfortably. “Costa Rica is a very popular destination for Swiss tourists,” said Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer.

“Swiss visitors generally spend more days and money on their holidays than others. The new route will bring approximately 27,000 tourists to Costa Rica every year, which will create an economic benefit of $80 million in the same period.”

The route not only opens Costa Rica to Swiss and European visitors, but offers a non-stop option to Costa Ricans who want to visit the heart of Europe and meet all the Zurich connections to many other cities in the continent.

“We are delighted to receive Edelweiss, a carrier member of the Lufthansa Group, in Costa Rica. A few months ago, we were announcing the new Panama-Frankfurt flight; today we have very good news again for Central America,” said Felipe Bonifatti, Lufthansa General Manager for Central America and the Caribbean.

President of the Republic Luis Guillermo Solís said that with the launching of this new route, Costa Rica strengthens its image as a highly competitive and popular tourist destination.

“For the Government of the Republic of Costa Rica, it is an honor that Edelweiss, a member of the Lufthansa Group and Switzerland´s leading leisure airline, has faith in our country by initiating this direct connection between Zurich and San José. It strengthens our position in Europe,”

Solís said. For his part, Mauricio Ventura, Minister of Tourism of Costa Rica, highlighted that the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) has been working very hard to attract airlines that connect the main tourist source markets.

“Almost 400,000 European tourists arrived to Costa Rica by all ports in 2015; more than 300,000 arrived by air. Therefore, our positioning in this market is very relevant and we were motivated to reinforce these actions in terms of airlines,” Ventura said.

“Today we celebrate this very important connection, which represents the third nonstop flight from Europe we announced in less than a year,” he added. Edelweiss flights from San José can be booked on swiss.com or via a travel agency. For more information, please visit flyedelweiss.com.
