Cruise Season Starts in Puntarenas

Costa Rican Pacific officially started the cruise season with the arrival of the Carnival Legend on August 24, with a maximum capacity of 2680 passengers and 930 crew members.

Wilhelm von Breymann, Minister of Tourism, said that with the start of the cruise season in the Pacific, the work done by the institution to consolidate this important tourist activity intensifies.

“The cruise season in the Pearl of the Pacific started with the arrival of this prestigious ship, and, thus, the implementation of all the actions that we have applied in order to ensure the country’s position as a cruise destination and the quality of service, with aspects as relevant as training various entrepreneurs such as tour operators, transporters, artisans, among others and improving infrastructure,” he said.

He noted that the ICT forged a differentiation and consolidation strategy of tourist destinations, with projects like handicrafts with identity, gastronomy and traditional cocktails program, as well as the rescue of music, fashion, and dance of coastal areas, primarily to increase competitiveness and quality of products and to add value to the experiences lived by domestic, foreign and cruise tourists in the country, besides facilitating entrepreneurship opportunities for local businesses, who find in tourism the ideal way to improve their economic statuses.

The Carnival Legend cruise ship is operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Its travel route is Cartagena – Colombia, Puntarenas- Costa Rica, and San Lucas-Mexico. It measures 292.50 meters long and weighs 85,920 tons.

This vessel offers activities both outdoors and inside the boat. It has a winding waterslide, hot tub, you can play golf, has a gym, spa, library and cruise passengers can enjoy of wine tasting events, cooking classes and many Broadway-style shows.

According to the Cruise 2012- 2013 Survey conducted by ICT, almost 80% of cruise passengers arriving in Puntarenas travel in pairs, have an average expense per person of $ 63 and come mainly from United States and Canada. Moreover, among the aspects that they are enjoying, we could mention the tours, the treatment of people, and nature.

Tamarindo News wanted to know if Tamarindo and other Guanacaste tourist destinations are considered as part of these cruise routes. Emilia González, President of ICT Cruise Commission said, “We have been informed that some of them are valuing arrivals at Tamarindo, Flamingo and Playas del Coco;” however, Gonzalez said that the travel routes of cruises are defined by the cruise lines along with shipping companies, and referred us to them for further details.

In future editions we will confirm the possibility of these cruise lines adding destinations such as Tamarindo and other Guanacaste beaches as new routes.
