The Army expels the Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya

28 June, 2009 08:06:00 By Patricia Duran K.

The tension grows in the streets of Tegucigalpa after this morning, just before dawn, a commando of the Armed Forces captured the president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya Rosales and transferred him immediately to an air base in the south of the capital and deported him to Costa Rica.

The Presidential House has been taken over by the military, who have located tanks next to each door. There Zelaya’s party is meeting, who protest the coup d'etat which they attribute " to be economic power", calling the soldiers traitors and burn their tires. The radio transmitters and television have been cut, as well as the electricity, and public transport has been suspended.

Tanks and full trucks of soldiers are taking the strategically important points from the city and several army air corps helicopters continuously fly over the Presidential House and the Parliament.

The president was captured in his home, in the colony of Tres Caminos, just when he thought that the danger of coup d'etat had already faded. In an interview granted to Reuters a few hours before his capture, Zelaya Rosales conjectured the support that he had received from the United States resulted in being fundamental so that the general rebel Romeo Vásquez, did not dare to take a blow since he had already tried Thursday to move the military to the street.

This over confidence caused the president to leave the Presidential House last night since the conflict exploded, and provoked by its intention to summon, today, a popular vote that opens the way of his re-election. The rumors say that one of the escorts of the president was shot at by the military, as well as the chancellor of the Government of Honduras, Patricia Rhodes, also has been detained.

The Costa Rican government has confirmed that Zelaya is already in the country, where he has asked for asylum. In declarations on the multistate station Telesur, and already from San Jose, Costa Rica, Zelaya has assured that he has been victim of a

"brutal kidnapping" on the part of the “military group". The Honduran president, has called this "civil disobedience pacífica" against " Blow of the State" and has assured that their bodyguards have fought during 30 minutes with the military before they have captured them.

The ambassador of Venezuela in the Organizacion of American Estados (OAS) has denounced before this organization that the ambassador of their country in Honduras, as well as the ambassadors of Cuba and Nicaragua, and the chancellor (Secretary of State) of Honduras, Patricia Rhodes, have also been kidnapped " by the masked military".

The United States state that they do not have roll in blow of Honduras

The United States denied Sunday any participation in the military coup against the president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, after which he urged Washington to clarify that it had a roll in the measures. " There was no participation by the United States in this measure against president Zelaya" , a representative of the White House said to Reuters.
