American Army Joined to the bridge construction in Talamanca
Bridges in Alto Telire, Talamana are being built with the help of 2 powerful helicopters and 16 American militaries.
Costa Rica is known for being the first country to abolish its army. However, a military contingent is traveling across Talamanca, not for fighting but for supporting the development and improvement of the life quality of inhabitants there.
Sixteen militaries of the United States Southern Command helped transporting materials for the construction of four suspension bridges, food, medicines, and school supplies for the communities of Alto Telire, Alto Cuen, Bajo Blei, and Río Congo in Talamanca.
“They are true “steel hawks” bringing hope and better life conditions to our people.” The hawks Rugelli Morales, Talamanca Mayor refers to are the two Black Hawks UH60, helicopters of the American Government.
Robert Andrew, Official of the Politics Division of the American Embassy, office in charge of the operation, said, “This is a mission of humanitarian work that aims at helping Costa Rica in such a good cause.”
According to Sergeant Jerume Atger, the helicopters can lift 2500-5000 kilograms of weight, depending of the altitude. “We are expecting to accomplish the mission by Monday or Tuesday, this week, if the weather and cargo allow us to,” Arger added.
The four new bridges will facilitate the accesses and communication in those indigenous communities, whose residents have to use “wooden bridges” and walk during five days to access basic services.
Five months ago, another American interdisciplinary group collaborated with the health authorities to provide more than 700 inhabitants of Piedra Meza, in Talamanca with medical services.
Ana Isabel García, Vice-Minister of Social Development, expressed her gratitude for the support given by the American Embassy in this type of projects. “The Rectory has an investment plan for indigenous towns that is part of the National Plan for Development; we are expecting to have the support of the American Government in order to complete more works in the area,” stated the official.
