Complaint Letter: Public Transport

06 July, 2010 10:14:00 Harry Briceño

Tamarindo, May 2010

Mr. Harry Briceño

Cabovela Transport Company

We, the users of bus route No. 537, going from Santa Cruz to Tamarindo, among others, are tired of bearing the bad service provided by the Company Cabovela. Therefore, once again, we set forth our most vehement complaint, because the service, instead of improving, gets worse every day.

We could list a series of factors undermining our rights as users, but we want to emphasize that every time we go aboard any of these buses, we are putting our lives in danger.

The units are in very bad shape and are constantly suffering damages that do not allow them to continue their course. At other times, drivers, pressured by customers, schedules and other aspects, irresponsibly take the risk of continuing almost in suicidal conditions (i.e., driving without lights after dark).

Due to the drawbacks mentioned above, the buses frequently cannot complete their route and the next bus is then in charge of picking up the users. With the incredible overcrowding that this situation generates, in addition to the serious threat that could cause a major accident, this whole situation is unsafe, especially in a climate like Guanacaste.

The number of buses is not consistent with the number of users, and the time intervals from one bus to another are very long, which forces people to deal with long "dead-time" periods. Their constant late arrivals to our workplaces frequently exceed the logical time expected for unforeseen circumstances.

Some buses have only one door, and if there are two, one of them may not work. Let’s reiterate that buses travel normally full of passengers, disregarding completely the minimum number of people who travel standing up (often there are more standing passengers than those sitting). When a passenger has to go down, it becomes unbearable, since it implies waiting a while for a process that is supposed to be fast and simple.

Detailing all the problems would be virtually endless. As frequent users of this service, we demand immediate improvements that may restore our confidence and safety – minimum requirements that any company dedicated to public service should provide to its customers.

We do not want, for any reason, to repeat what has been very common in our country, which is waiting until facing an unfortunate accident due to negligence, oversight, or irresponsibility, in order to take needed steps to improve a situation.

We appreciate any help to eradicate our complacency, as well as the irresponsibility of Cabovela Transport Company, once and for all.

The undersigned:
